Cycle the mountains and valleys of Hokkaido, the beautiful north island of Japan: We begin our tour Asahikawa city in central Hokkaido – about 1-1/2 hours by plane from Tokyo. We spend a day exploring Asahikawa on two wheels, experiencing a traditional tea ceremony, visiting a working farm, and making a Japanese lunch. Then ride a bike path along the Churui River, past Churui Lake up to Mt. Asahi, gaining 3,000 feet elevation over 30 miles. We stay two nights in a lovely hotel in Daisetsuzan National Park, with a free day to ride the gondola up to pristine alpine lakes with wildflowers in summer. Bring hiking boots to climb to the summit of 7,500 foot Mt. Asahi – about 2 hours, with spectacular views.
After enjoying alpine views, we pedal down the mountain, over rolling hills and valleys which are dotted with fields of rice, sugar beets, potatoes and more. Back in Asahikawa we learn about the Ainu indigenous people of Hokkaido at a museum. Daily biking distances range from 30 – 45 miles at a moderate pace. A support van accompanies us. Bring your own bike or option to rent a road or hybrid bike in Asahikawa.
After 8 days in Hokkaido, we fly to Tokyo and spend 3 days exploring gardens, museums, shrines, temples, and neighborhoods by subway and on foot. Note that this tour begins in Asahikawa, Hokkaido and ends in Tokyo.
Tour Price: $3800 per person (double occupancy)
